Description

Project: Municipal Library of Stuttgart
Description:

The city library at Mailänder Platz is the central library in the library network of Stuttgart. Its architectural concept dares to polarize: A 40-metre high cube with 44 metres in lengt and width. This monolithic design carries on into the interior, where visitors enter an empty 4-storey interior hall after passing the foyer. Portraying a "heart" of the building, this hall is supposed to be a place of silence and reflection before the reading room is accessed through one of the lifts or stairways. Much like the rest of the interior, the reading room features an open an well-lit environment with only a few colourful elements such as furniture and, most of all, book spines.

Lindner fitted the library with 3,100 sqm of CAVOPEX hollow floors. This system consists of a pedestal substructure glued to calcium sulphate panels, the result being a closed floor surface with excellent properties. By utilizing the hollow space, technical installations stay hidden from the observer, drawing the attention to where it should be: on the media exhibited.
